TRACKING ASSEMBLY FOR A CONVEYOR BELT

A tracking assembly (10) for keeping a conveyor belt (24) centrally aligned includes a sub-frame (12) which is adapted to be mounted to a support frame (16) for the conveyor belt. At least one independently rotatable idler ( 18, 20) is mounted on the sub-frame, the idler supporting the conveyor belt in position, the idler being aligned generally transverse to the length of the belt. The idler includes a support shaft (28), an outer drum (26) rotatably supported on the shaft and a pivot assembly (34) located within the drum defining a pivot axis (36) about which the drum is pivotable relative to the shaft, the pivot axis bein g perpendicular to the belt. A contact or control arrangement (38) is provided on at least one side of the idler which will be contacted v ia an edge region of a conveyor belt which has travelled from its central position to that one side. When the conveyor contacts the contac t means this will cause the drum of the idler to pivot about the pivot axis to a position in which it steers the belt back to its central position.
