Producing alkylaromatics, for use as diesel fuel or diesel fuel additives, involves reacting an aromatic feed with alkylating agents selected as a function of the number of rings in the aromatic nucleus, the number of alkyl chains bonded to the aromatic rings, the length of the alkyl chains and/or the position of the aromatic rings on the alkyl chains in the product alkylaromatics. An independent claim is also included for a method of formulating a synthetic diesel fuel or diesel fuel additive by selecting alkylaromatics as a function of at least one of the above parameters, so that the diesel fuel or additive has a cetane number above 30.
