PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head in which a recording operation can be secured stably by preventing collision with a recording medium by decreasing the extent of projection of a recording shield layer. SOLUTION: A heat radiation layer 10 for radiating heat generated in a thin film coil 16 is provided at a leading side of the thin film coil 16. When the thin film coil 16 is heated in recording information, the heat is not guided to the trailing side of the thin film coil 16, that is, the arrangement position side of a write-shield layer 18, but guided preferentially to the reading side, that is, the opposite side of the arrangement position side of the write-shield layer 18 and radiated. Thereby, little heat is accumulated in the write-shield layer 18, and since the write-shield layer 18 hardly expands thermally, the extent of projection of the write-shield layer 18 is decreased.
