A plasma display panel is provided to simplify manufacturing procedures by forming a dielectric layer and a multi-functional film at the same time, and achieve improved contrast by forming an external light absorbing layer in the region of the multi-functional film corresponding to a non-discharge region. A plasma display panel comprises a first substrate and a second substrate(21) opposed with each other so as to form a discharge space(S); pairs of first and second electrodes(X,Y) arranged on the surface of the first substrate opposed to the second substrate; a multi-functional film(30) constituted by a plurality of MgO layers(31,32,33,34) such that the multi-functional film covers the first and second electrodes; a plurality of address electrodes(A) arranged on the surface of the second substrate opposed to the first substrate; barrier ribs arranged between the first and second substrates so as to define the discharge space into a plurality of discharge cells; and phosphors deposited in the discharge space. At least one of the MgO layers of the multi-functional film is an external light absorbing layer. |
