PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid discharge apparatus capable of precisely controlling the quantity of a liquid to be discharged and made thin-shaped. SOLUTION: In the apparatus, patterns 71 are provided on a retainer 7 rotated with balls 4 and the retainer 7 also serves as an encoder disk. Because the rotating state of the balls 4 is detected nearly directly by the detection of the rotating state of the retainer 7, the detection accuracy is improved compared to the control by the detection of the rotation of a rotor 5 and then the quantity of the liquid to be discharged is precisely controlled. Because the retainer 7 is a member originally existing as a member constituting the liquid discharge apparatus 1, it is needless to newly attach the encoder disk, and the liquid discharge apparatus is made thin-shaped.
