<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exactly estimate a temperature of a switching element by taking a temperature of an inverter immediately after a synchronous motor is locked, and by adding a temperature rise in the switching element corresponding to a torque command value to the initial value. <P>SOLUTION: When the synchronous motor 1 is locked, the temperature of the inverter 4 immediately after the locking is stored as its initial value. During the locking, a calorific power of the switching element 5 based on a current supplied to the switching element 5 is calculated.
