PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element restraining growth of alteration of an organic layer such as a dark spot in the organic layer. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent element is so structured that the organic layer 20 is caught between a positive electrode 10 and a negative electrode 30; a light extraction surface 41 is set at least on the side of one-side electrode; and light emitted from the organic layer 20 is extracted to the outside from the extraction surface 41. The organic layer 20 is divided into a plurality of sections 22 by a plurality of separators 21 in a surface direction nearly parallel to the extraction surface 41. Each separator 21 is non-conductive, and physically connected to both the electrodes 10 and 30. The electrodes 10 and 30 are each formed so as to be electrically connected to the organic layer 20 in each section 22, and so as to cover the organic layer 20 and the separators 21.
