PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which makes printing on the basis of printing data including gradation information, selects the different numbers of divisions, particularly in a sub scanning direction, and makes a high speed color printing without reducing the number of the gradations in color printing. SOLUTION: Dot data is divided into two or four for printing in the sub scanning direction. Based on a dividing instruction, pattern data selected in a pattern generating section 32 is read out and outputted to a print head. At the same time, quantity-of-light correction is made with quantity-of-light correction data.
