A position information providing terminal using a GPS and its method are provided to solve a problem that a network must be provided to obtain a position value, a huge communication cost is incurred, and a user cannot be provided with fine geographical information as desired. Map data including a current position or a target position is downloaded from a mobile communication provider network and stored in a memory unit of a mobile terminal of a user according to a corresponding request(S201). When the user requests a current position of the mobile terminal through a GPS function, an MSM receives position data from a GPS receiver and obtains a position value of the mobile terminal including a latitude and a longitude(S202). A position of the mobile terminal in the map data is recognized by matching the position value to local geographical information(S203).
