A variable muffler is provided to make exhaust gas passing-sectional area of an exhaust pipe varied according to exhaust pressure of an engine and to prevent a noise from being produced while the exhaust gas passing-sectional area is varied. A variable muffler has a resonant chamber divided into plural chambers by partitions, and an inlet pipe is connected between an exhaust pipe and the rear chamber. An outlet pipe is connected between the front chamber and a tail pipe, and an inner pipe is connected between the front chamber and the rear chamber. The variable muffler comprises a square pipe(30) interposed in the middle of the inlet pipe; rails(32,33) symmetrically formed to the sides of the square pipe in a diagonal direction wherein distance separated from each other from the front toward the rear is increased; upper and lower cylinders(40,50) having both ends supported to the rails to make the distance between the upper and lower cylinders changed according to a change of exhaust pressure of exhaust gas and to make open space changed; and return springs mourned to make a gap(G) between the upper and lower cylinders reduced by pulling the upper and lower cylinders forward when exhaust pressure given to the upper and lower cylinders does not exist.
