A compact step trainer for fitness use has two pedals (20, 30) fitted with the front ends on two tilted support arms (21, 31) mounted at one side of an H-shaped ground support frame (10) with tilt and lateral swivel movement. The rear of each step is further braced by separate dampers (24) secured to the support frame by coupling blocks (40) with orthogonal bores to provide tilt and lateral swivel movement. A cable (17) links the pedals via control arms (22) and is looped over a friction wheel (16). The trainer provides normal step action as well as lateral movements to exercise other muscles.
