A semiconductor device capable of performing a high speed processing in a length-variable bit string data processing, such as image compression/decompression. A buffer (30) and a control circuit (40) used for a length-variable bit string data operation are provided between a compressed-data storing memory (10) and a processor (20). The processor (20) is adapted such that it can issue commands of displaying, acquiring and writing the length-variable bit string data. Preferably, the buffer (30) has a bit capacity that is twice the bid width of the compressed-data storing memory (10).
