PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of forming projection video images of many kinds of aspect ratios by using the anamorphic lenses of a single kind or a relatively few kinds of longitudinal and lateral enlargement ratios. SOLUTION: The projector 1 is constituted of the anamorphic lens 5 with a tag 6 for converting the aspect ratio of projection images, a tag reader 7 for reading the information of the tag, an aspect ratio detection part 8 for detecting the aspect ratio that input video signals have, a light valve pixel display area conversion part 9 and a light valve driving part 10. The light valve pixel display area conversion part 9 decides the pixel display area of a light valve 2 from the detected result of the aspect ratio detection part and the magnification of the longitudinal and lateral enlargement of the anamorphic lens 5 for which the tag 6 is read by the tag reader 7.
