In an applicator for liquid cosmetics, a brush 5 is retracted through a sleeve surrounded by an annular reservoir 1, and pulls a sealing member 14 into the sleeve behind it. A housing 3, for the brush stem 4, may be connected to the reservoir 1 by a screwthread. The stem 4 has a projection (8), which extends through a longitudinal slit (9) in the housing and enables the brush 5 to be extended, either directly, or by turning knob (12, Fig. 4, not shown). A slightly resilient plastic ball 14 seals the walls of the sleeve. A conical seating may be provided, when a steel ball 14 is used. On operating the projection (8), to extend the brush, flange 6 engages spring 15 and carries ball 14 towards recess 19. The ball is moved against the action of spring 15, into the recess 19, by the passage of stem 4. When the brush reaches its extended position, the sleeve is sealed by flange 6. The reservoir 1 may be of transparent material. In another form, (Fig. 6, not shown) the flange (24) acts as a sealing member in both the retracted and extended positions of the brush. |
