A method for displaying an image, a program for displaying an image and an apparatus for displaying an image are provided to easily and certainly recognize contents of motion picture stored on a video recording medium by displaying an important thumb nail image in displaying digest of motion picture. A CPU(Central Processing Unit) stores addresses of motion picture data at an RAM(Random Access Memory)(S201). The CPU searches for a starting address of motion picture data to be displayed from the RAM(S202). An optical head of an optical disk drive is moved to a starting address position to read data from an optical disk and to input read data to an MPEG decoder(S203,S204). Thumb nail image data corresponding to image data extracted from a head of motion picture data is generated(S205). It is judged whether the generated thumb nail image data includes pixels having different color difference data in a number more than a predetermined number(S206). If so, a thumb nail image corresponding to the thumb nail image data is displayed(S207).
