System and method for providing battery backup power

The battery backup system can include a battery, a power source, and a battery controller connected to power source and the battery. The power source can be connected to the battery controller unidirectionally. In addition, the battery can be connected to the battery controller bidirectionally. The battery controller can help determine whether the sedation and analgesia system should be run with the power source or the battery.
