A digital pen and paper system comprises a digital pen (300) adapted to acquire information from a position-determining pattern (108) printed on a carrier (100), and -a base station (500) which is arranged to receive information from the pen (300) and to send the information across a telecommunications network (440) to a remote device (430), the base station (500) having a dedicated processor (520) and program instructions adapted to receive information from the pen (300). The base station (500) comprises a self-contained unit which includes a modem for connection to a remote device across a land-based telecommunications network. It may be configured remotely from across the network (440) by the same remote device (430) to which it will send pen information.
