A pointing device of a ring shape for a portable computer and a method thereof are provided to measure/convert movement of a finger into a pointing signal by using an accelerometer and transfer the converting signal to the portable computer. The accelerometer(10) outputs an acceleration signal according to the movement of the finger. A signal processor(11) detects a micro-collision signal generated when the finger touches a contact face and a rising signal generated when the finger leaves the contact face, and outputs the pointing signal by detecting a pointing movement of the finger from the micro-collision signal to the rising signal. The signal processor is equipped with the first differential signal processor, a vertical movement detector, and a pointing signal detector.
