An amplifier with selective frequency phase/delay control is provided to minimize power levels detected for desired insertion phase levels without using expensive delay elements by performing a destructive interference among a series of frequencies. An amplifier system(300) amplifies an input signal to generate an amplified output signal. An amplifier path is adapted to generate the amplified output signal from the input signal. A reference path is adapted to generate a reference signal. A plurality of nodes(314,316,318) are adapted to generate a combined signal from a sample of the amplified output signal and a sample of the reference signal. A power detector(310) detects power levels of the combined signal. A controller(312) controls operations of the amplifier path based on the detected power level. The amplifier system amplifies input signals so that the overall signal delay of the amplifier path does not match the overall signal delay of the reference path.
