PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing the subject compound at low cost in high selectivity and yield with slight formation of byproducts such as acyloxybenzoic acid oligoesters. SOLUTION: This acyloxybenzoic acid or its salt shown by the formula (R<1> is a 1-21C alkyl, etc.; M is H, an alkali metal, etc.), is obtained by reaction of an acylating agent with a hydroxybenzoic acid or its salt in the presence of at least one kind of base (which may be in the form of salt) selected from tertiary amines, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, alkali metal compounds and alkaline earth metal compounds.
