<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface type optical switch wherein high speed switching is made possible and characteristic deterioration due to heat stress is eliminated with a simple construction and to provide an optical communication system. <P>SOLUTION: The surface type optical switch comprising a surface emitting semiconductor laser having an active layer consisting of a III-V group mixed crystal semiconductor and semiconductor multilayered film reflection mirrors provided at upper and lower parts of the active layer on a semiconductor substrate and a surface type optical modulator having modulation electrodes applying voltage for modulating light emitted from the surface emitting semiconductor laser, a medium whose refractive index is changed by an electric field formed by the modulation electrodes and which consists of an organic crystal and has an electrooptical effect and a polarizing plate for converting the change of the refractive index of the medium having the electrooptical effect into the change of light intensity, has a heat stress relaxing layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
