PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus which enables a user to apply a PI (parallel imaging) method freely to a cross section in an arbitrary direction in an imaging method using a plurality of surface coils and consequently acquires a high S/N ratio or magnetic resonance images at a faster speed, and a radio frequency coil used for the apparatus. SOLUTION: The magnetic resonance imaging apparatus acquires magnetic resonance signals by the PI method through the radio frequency coil 14 having at least two coil units 142 as the surface coils arranged in the direction of the static magnetic field (Z direction) and in X direction perpendicular to the Z direction and both an upper unit 140 and a lower unit 141 as the surface coils in Y direction. The upper unit 140 and the lower unit 141 are fixed by a band or the like to be attached to a subject easily. The signals detected by each surface coil are transmitted to a data processing system by respectively independent transmitting systems, and are imaged as the magnetic resonance images.
