PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a free piston type stirling engine, of low cost, high efficiency, and high output, without using an expensive flexure spring. SOLUTION: Surface hardening treatment of DLC coating is applied to bearing surfaces of a power piston 2, a rod 4, etc., to reduce reciprocating and sliding loss, and improve bearing precision. A low-cost coil spring can be used instead of using a high-cost flexure spring. In addition, a displacer controller 33 is provided to function as a small motor and power generator at an end of a displacer rod 4a. Engine start becomes easy. Control to keep the power piston 2 and the displacer piston 3 at their optimum phases becomes possible in any operation state.
