PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber production method, an optical fiber preform production method, and an optical fiber, each of which is advantageous in cost over the conventional. SOLUTION: The optical fiber preform production method comprises producing a glass microparticle deposit comprising a core and a cladding so that the equation: 0.95J≤D (wherein D is the outside diameter of a transparent glass preform obtained by sintering the deposit, and J is the cladding diameter determined as an optical fiber preform from the core diameter d and its refractive index) may be satisfied, and correcting the transparent glass fiber preform so that D may coincide with J to form an optical fiber preform. The correction is performed by grinding its circumference or by the additional deposition of glass microparticles. The transparent glass preform to which glass microparticles have been additionally deposited is used as such as an optical fiber preform, which is drawn into an optical fiber. The method is simpler and can reduce a manufacturing cost. The optical fiber preform and the optical fiber has no boundary layer in their claddings in a radial cross section but has a boundary layer only in the region at least 0.95 time the outside diameter.
