The invention comprises urethanes of the formula in which R denotes (1) R<SP>1</SP>O-, R<SP>1</SP> being a C 1 -C 18 alkyl or acyl group, a C 2 -C 18 alkenyl group or a phenyl or mono- or di-alkyl phenyl group of 6-24 carbon atoms, or (2) a residue -N(R<SP>11</SP>)R<SP>111</SP>, R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> denoting alkyl groups of a total number of carbon atoms of 2-24, m and n are integers of 0-80, at least one being between 1 and 80 and being such that the product contains an average of 40-90% by weight of ethoxy groups, A and B denote the same or different straight or branched alkylene chains of 2-4 carbon atoms, at least one being a C 2 chain, y is an integer of 1-4 and X denotes an alkyl, aryl or alkaryl group. The products are obtainable by reacting one or more alcohols R(AO) n (BO) m H with an isocyanate X(NCO)y.
