A receiver (5) consists of multiple receiving elements (5a). In learning process, a transmitter (2) illuminates a background object (7) at the limit of the monitored region, e.g. a wall or machine, and the level of the received signals are learnt as reference signal characteristic in an evaluation unit (9). An object report is generated if the signal characteristic of the level of the received signal deviates from the reference signal characteristic.
