1,183,536. Treating charge and purifying exhaust gases. ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO. June 23, 1967 [June 30, 1966], No.29115/67. Heading F1B. In an engine having a hot spot 28 Fig. 1 in the induction manifold heated by exhaust gases supplied to chamber 26, some of which gases are fed through passage 46 into the induction manifold, and having air fed through pipes 32...38 Fig.2 into the exhaust outlets, the pipe 34 feeding air to the exhaust outlet associated with the hot spot chamber 26 is blocked or eliminated to prevent air being mixed with the exhaust gas fed into the induction manifold. In the V-8 engine shown exhaust gases are supplied from each exhaust system to the chamber 26. The amount of exhaust gas fed into the induction manifold is controlled by a valve 54 connected mechanically to the carburetter throttle spindle 56 or actuated by a diaphragm responsive to intake manifold or Venturi suction. In Fig.2 a valve 30, provided in one exhaust manifold to cause a pressure difference between the manifolds of the two banks of cylinders, is preferably locked in open position. |
