PURPOSE: A backlight unit for an LCD is provided to remove a mold frame for supporting a rear surface of a light guide panel by modifying the structure of the light guide panel and the mold frame, thereby reducing the thickness of the backlight unit. CONSTITUTION: A backlight unit for an LCD includes a mold frame(21) in the shape of surrounding side surfaces of a light guide panel, a diffusion plate, a prism plate and a protecting plate stacked in sequence. The light guide panel(23) has protrusions(24) formed alternately at upper and lower parts for restraining movement thereof. The mold frame has grooves(22) to be inserted by the protrusions.
