The method involves ventilating the volumes (11a-11d) into the inlet ducts (5a-5d) between the control elements (10a-10d) and the combustion chambers, during the closing position of the control elements. The method may be carried out in a partial load operation of the internal combustion engine (2). When the load of the internal combustion engine is low, the supply of air into the combustion chamber (4a-4d) is controlled by the ventilation of volumes into the inlet ducts. An independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the operation method.
