PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily obtain a prophylactic/therapeutic agent for inflammatory diseases capable of effectively utilizing Alpinia specios K. Schum, being readily available as an ingredient derived from the plant, scarcely having adverse effect on living bodies and having high safety, and to readily provide a functional food or food material for prophylaxis/improvement of inflammatory diseases.

SOLUTION: This prophylactic/therapeutic agent for inflammatory diseases comprises Alpinia specios K. Schum or its treated material as an active ingredient. The treated material is preferably an extract of the leaf of Alpinia specios K. Schum and has a nitrogen monoxide production-inhibiting action. The extract of the leaf of Alpinia specios K. Schum comprises pinosylvin monomethyl ether.
