PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an apparatus and method for centering a guide rail for a cage of an elevator capable of setting at an arbitral position in a hoistway by pressing and centering the guide rail for the cage by using piano wires for centering entrances as a reference. SOLUTION: This device includes the entrance centering piano wires 6, 7 hung down toward the hoistway pit 1 from an upper portion of the of the hoistway and serves as a reference for positioning the entrances, a template 33 to be engaged with the piano wires for centering the entrances to position, and a fixture 18 for centering the guide rail for the cage connected with the template. In this device for positioning the one pair of guide rails for the cage 14, 15 by using the template 33 as a reference, the template 33 is fixed at a bridging bar 16 which can be extended/contracted freely, bridged and fixed at an arbitral position by being pressed at the side wall in the hoistway.
