PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and a facsimile machine with excellent operability wherein an original carrying mechanism is simple and a flat bed type image reading and recording apparatus is downsized. SOLUTION: When an original end detection means does not detect the presence of a part protruded from a platen, only image information on the platen is read, and on the other hand, when the original end detection means detects the presence of a part protruded from the platen, first image information on the platen is read and thereafter a first original carrying means carries an original, carries the protruded part onto the platen, second image information adjacent to the first image information is read and an image processing section composes the first and second image information items into one-set of image information.
