PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing ethanol from a ligneous biomass by a fermentation, by which the ethanol can stably be produced in a high yield without relating to the change in the ligneous composition of the ligneous biomass. SOLUTION: This method for producing the ethanol from the ligneous biomass by the fermentation is characterized by adding and using two or more yeasts containing at least one yeast belonging to the genus Kluyveromyces or the genus Saccharomyces in the fermentation process. Preferably, the method for producing the ethanol from the ligneous biomass by the fermentation comprises adding and seed-culturing two or more yeasts containing at least one yeast belonging to the genus Kluyveromyces or the genus Saccharomyces to one seed culture medium using a sugar solution used in a fermentation process and then subjecting the seed culture solution to the fermentation process.
