[Also in Division F4] Apparatus for oxidizing a continuous strand 10 of carboniferous fibres e.g. poly acrylonitrile fibres, comprises an oven 30, rollers 31, 32 mounted therein and having spaced grooves engaged by the fibres wound round said rolls in zig-zag fashion, rollers 22, 23 feeding the strand to the furnace and take-up bobbin 46. A driven shaft 35 carrying roller 32 rotates the bobbin 46 through a clutch 47 and rotates shaft 33 carrying roller 31 through a chain 40, shaft 27 and chain 38. Shaft 27 drives feed rollers 22, 23 and shaft 33 drives a cam 49 whereby a guide device 45 is oscillated to wind the strand over the full width of the bobbin 46. The strand passes through a water tank 17 on its way to the oven which is supplied with hot air at about 200‹ C. If the strand breaks, a roller 24 on a pivoted arm 25 strikes an electrical contact 26 to stop the drive. |
