An ultraviolet air sterilising apparatus comprises a duct 2 defining a bore inside a housing 1, an ultraviolet (UV) tube 4 sterilising air drawn by a fan 5 along the bore, one or more deflecting devices 214 in the bore arranged to define a narrowing 216 to deflect the air into the narrowing 216, and the UV tube 4 positioned at the narrowing 216. Housing 1 may be made from plastics and comprises assembled left and right halves 11, 12, a rear inlet grille 13 and front grille 14. External to the duct 2 may be a chamber 3 containing electrical components 71, 72 for powering and controlling the UV tube 4 and fan 5. Shields 215, 224 downstream and upstream respectively of the UV tube 4 may be provided and prevent UV radiation leaking out of the housing 1. A removable and replaceable filter 8 may be provided. A carbon fibre ionizer element 6 powered by a negative high voltage direct current may be provided. The wavelength radiation may be in the UVC range and preferably at 253.7 nm. The apparatus may be used in homes, offices and produced at a bigger size for large scale use. Additional deflector devices may be provided at the top and bottom of the narrowing 216. |
