Tracing process comprises: (a) providing each supplier, including intermediate suppliers, with a sub-database; (b) providing a system capable of providing a link between the information key and the sub-database in which the information can be found; (c) providing a network connection between the sub-databases, a central system and the end purchasers; (d) assigning a global unique lot number to each array of products supplied by the suppliers; (e) storing the lot number in the sub-database for the corresponding supplier, along with information concerning the lot destination and the components of the lot products; (f) optionally assigning a global unique weight number to the individually weighed units in the lot and assigning this number, the weight and a marker to the lot in the sub-database for the corresponding supplier; and (g) providing different secure access methods to parties requesting information so that they can obtain information via the net work relating to a lot or weight number.
