A mixture of anhydrous natural rubber sap and chemical additives is cast in a mold and then steamed : A mattress is made from natural rubber material which is mixed with chemical additives including talc, bentonite and alginate, which can be added to essentially anhydrous rubber sap in finely ground form or as aqueous solutions. Sap is cast in a mold which is lined with aluminum and is enclosed in a perforated stainless steel case. The molded sap is steamed by supplying steam from a boiler to a stainless steel pipe system extending around the mold and containing exit holes. Water reservoirs are located in between the pipes for boiling water and collected condensed steam. Excess steam is collected in a separate reservoir. The pipe system comprises a fixed part and a movable part located above the mold cover.
