FIELD: metal working, namely applying of wear resistant coatings onto cutting tools. ^ SUBSTANCE: method is realized due to applying multi-layer coatings by vacuum-plasma process onto working surfaces of cutting tool. Upper layer of coating is characterized by high level of residual compression stresses in range 1500-2000 MPa and it lowers level of equivalent stresses in cutting wedge of tool during cutting process until values consisting 0.2 - 0.25 of ultimate strength of tool material. Inner layer of coating is characterized by level of residual stresses consisting 0.4 - 0.5 of stresses of upper layer.
