A work surface for paper sheet transport has a composite material panel (1) in a horizontal position parallel to the paper transport direction. A metal or plastic trough is fitted under the work surface to form a suction duct (LK1) connected to the upper surface by suction holes (D1, D2) aligned in the direction of paper transport. The duct is fitted with suction units and the paper sheets are moved by suction belts sliding over the top of the work surface.
