The performance of a vidicon tube using an oxide target deteriorates in use due to loss of oxygen and/or water vapour from the target, and this is remedied by supplying oxygen and/or water vapour to the target. In one process the exhaust tube is connected to a pump system and opened, e.g. by magnetically moving a piece of magnetic material inside the pump duct, and oxygen and/or water vapour together with an inert gas such as helium or nitrogen is admitted for a suitable time, after which the tube is exhausted, sealed and gettered. The time depends on the partial pressures which may be between 100-500 Î 10<SP>-5</SP> Torr for the oxygen and about 1000 Î 10<SP>-5</SP> Torr for the water vapour to give a reaction time of a few minutes. In another process (Fig. 1, not shown), the tube is provided with metal rings or plates on which are disposed preparations which evolve oxygen and water vapour on heating; lead dioxide is a suitable source of oxygen and dried magnesium or calcium hydroxides are suitable sources of water vapour. When the target is to be re-activated the supports are heated by highfrequency or by a laser beam for a suitable time after which the tube is gettered by heating a getter ring. In a modification of this process (Fig. 2, not shown) the supports are disposed near thermionic cathode so as to be heated by conduction or radiation from it so that an oxygen and/or water vapour atmosphere is maintained continuously in the tube at a pressure of not more than about 10<SP>-5</SP> Torr. The target may be of lead monoxide, zinc oxide, or bismuth trioxide and may have P-type conductivity over a small depth on the surface to be scanned by the electron beam in order to reduce dark current. The P-conductivity may be provided by excess oxygen or by local doping of thallium in the lead oxide.</p>
