PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an editing system capable of remarkably increasing an editing efficiency and to provide its control method . SOLUTION: When opening a selected file, it is judged whether or not the storage capacitance of a memory holding means including the data capacitance of video data required for generating an edited video image based on an editing list stored in the relevant file exceeds an upper limit value set as a threshold for starting erasure in a ratio designated to the relevant storage capacitance and only when it is determined that the storage capacitance exceeds the relevant upper limit value, the video data stored in the memory holding means are erased in the order from the oldest storage time to a lower limit value set as a threshold for ending the erasure in the ratio designated to the storage capacitance, thereby storing and holding the video data required for generating the edited video image in the memory holding means.
