PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for authenticating fingerprints eliminating the need for a user to remember the order or combination of inputting fingerprints to increase serviceability, while enhancing the security of fingerprint authentication. SOLUTION: A plurality of pieces of special information and a plurality of pieces of fingerprint information corresponding to the respective pieces of special information are registered in a fingerprint database 105 during fingerprint registration. During fingerprint authentication, the special information used during the registration is presented and a request is made to input a plurality of fingerprints that correspond to the pieces of special information. The plurality of fingerprints inputted are collated with a plurality of fingerprints corresponding to the pieces of special information stored in the database 105 to determine if the user is the authenticated person.
