PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a side view type electronic endoscope capable of changing an observation visual field in a longitudinal direction and forming an insertion tube distal end to be short and small. SOLUTION: In this side view type electronic endoscope, the insertion tube distal end 2 is fixedly provided with an objective optical system 6 having an optical axis perpendicular to the axial direction of the insertion tube distal end 2, and a solid imaging element 10 with an imaging face 10a arranged in the projection position of a photographed body by the objective optical system 6 is advanced/retreated in the axial direction of the insertion tube distal end 2 by remote operation from the hand side 3 of an insertion tube 1.
