PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a program protection device for a programmable sewing machine which protects sewing parameters and sewing programs based on whether an attachable and detachable member is mounted or not. SOLUTION: In the program protection device 8, a control device 7 sets the programmable sewing machine into a change prohibited mode in which a switch to a sewing program change mode capable of changing the sewing program and a parameter change mode capable of changing the sewing parameter is prohibited if a detector 51 detects that a treadle 4 is mounted on a buttonholing machine, and the detected signals are transmitted to the control device 7. On the contrary, if the detector 51 detects that the treadle 4 is not mounted, and the detected signals are transmitted to the control device 7, the control device 7 sets the programmable sewing machine into a change permitted mode in which a switch to the sewing program change mode and the parameter change mode is permitted.
