PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly carry a medium and to simplify a structure of a widthwise shifting device for the medium. SOLUTION: The widthwise shifting device is provided with a carrying member carrying the medium 11 in a carrying passage of the medium 11, a guide member forming a reference surface 12 along the carrying passage, a widthwise shifting mechanism 38 arranged at a widthwise shifting position set at a prescribed part in the carrying passage to shift the medium 11 widthwise and press it onto the reference surface 12, and a preliminary widthwise shifting mechanism 39 set in an upstream side of the widthwise shifting position in a carrying direction of the medium 11. As the preliminary widthwise shifting mechanism 39 moves the medium 11 to a side of the reference surface to perform preliminary widthwise shifting at a preliminary widthwise shifting position, an amount of engagement with respect to the carrying member of the medium 11 can be increased. Accordingly, the medium 11 can be smoothly carried and the widthwise shifting can be sufficiently performed at the widthwise shifting position. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
