PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent damage on a photoreceptor drum or the like by surely detecting an foreign object such as a staple and a clip attached to a sheet and stopping sheet carrying operation. SOLUTION: This sheet carrying device is provided with carrying rollers 20 carrying the sheet S and an inter-shaft distance measuring means 30 measuring a distance between shafts arranged above both end parts of the shafts of a pair of the carrying rollers 20. The inter-shaft distance measuring means 30 is composed of a light emitting diode as a light emitting element, and a photodiode 32 as a light receiving element. The light emitting diode 31 and the photodiode 32 are respectively fixed so that light emitted from the light emitting diode 31 can expose the shaft 21a of one roller 21 and the reflected light can enter the photodiode 32, and the distance between the shafts is measured from a change in intensity of the reflected light with movement of the roller shaft 21a. When the distance between the shafts of the pair of the carrying rollers 20 measured by the inter-shaft distance measuring means 30 reaches a prescribed value, the carrying operation of the sheet S by the pair of the carrying rollers 20 is stopped.
