PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To expand and correct an input image signal in such a manner that the expression performance of image display data possessed by a display panel can be completely obtained. SOLUTION: A low frequency portion (a portion where a plurality of first pixel values continue and further a plurality of second pixel values changed in the prescribed level pixel values from the first pixel values continue) of each input image signal inputted to each pixel of the image display apparatus 1 is detected by a detecting means 53. A signal expansion means 54 expands and corrects the pixel values so as to change the values successively by imparting a prescribed bit count to the bit strings of the first and/or second pixel values in the prescribed range of the low frequency portion. As a result, the degradation in the display performance of the image, such as a pseudo-artifact, can be prevented and the high-grade image display of improved color separation performance can be realized.
