The rod-form operating element for the transmission of tensile and pressure forces, such as a piston rod, pushrod or similar, consists of an elastically deformable material which without the action of deformation forces transversely to the longitudinal axis assumes the form of a rigid cross sectional profile, and by deformation forces transversely to the longitudinal axis is brought into a coiled form. The operating element is constructed from two approximately V-shaped bands (1) which are interconnected in the apex region so that an X-shaped cross section is formed.
