The coil former (1) has a U-shaped profile with a base section (3) and 2 side sections (4a,4b), the wall thickness (d) of the side sections reducing in the radial direction moving outwards from the base section. The side sections are pushed outwards at their outer radial ends when wound with the coil winding (2), so that their outer radial ends are in line with their inner radial ends at the point of attachment to the base section.
