<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ergonomic pointing device for controlling an electronic device by receiving a command from a user. <P>SOLUTION: This ergonomic pointing device is generally equipped with a shaft, a roller and a frame. The shaft is equipped with a ground spring contact part and two direction detection spring contact parts. The roller is disposed around the shaft so as to freely rotate around the longitudinal axis of the shaft. The inside of the roller is provided with a conductive surface that is so structured as to be kept in an electrical contact state with the ground spring contact part of the shaft through the entire rotation of the roller. The conductive surface is so structured as to be capable of determining the direction and velocity of the rotation of the roller by alternately carrying out electric contact and non-contact with the direction detection spring contact part during the entire rotation of the roller.
